Study Smarter With These Helpful Tips

To study or not to study, that is every student’s question. With a good amount of the day spent in the classroom, followed by extracurricular activities – and maybe even a part-time afters chool job – finding the time to study can be a challenge for students of all ages. Here are a few tips that will help you get you through your next study session.

  • Start early. Whether you are studying for a math test or college entrance exams, like the SATs, jumpstart your efforts by using a divide and conquer approach. Instead of devoting longer chunks of a day over a short span of time to cram, organize yourself so that you are starting early with shorter intervals that spread out over weeks.
  • Grab a pen and paper. Long before laptops or tablets were welcomed into the classroom, a pen and paper was the student’s weapon of choice. Nowadays, college students are hidden behind laptops when taking lecture notes. However, this may not be the best way to store the information. Recent research shows that students who write down notes retain more information and those that rely on taking notes on laptops run risk of shallow processing. Next time when you are rushing to class, reach for your pen. It’ll lighten up your book bag and lead to a greater bank of information retention.
  • Feed the brain. It’s no surprise that physical activity is the best way to effectively maintain a healthy body, but, what about the brain? One study shows that adults improve their processing speed after thirty minutes of moderate exercise and children after twenty minutes of moderate exercise. Increasing your attention, processing information faster and improving cognitive task performances are some of the positive results of exercise. So the next time you go to the gym, bring your class notes or better yet, pop a few squats at the library to strength the brain.
  • Drop the bad habits. Everyone has a bad habit they wish they could shake. They range from procrastination, to being easily distracted, to memorizing and never actually understanding the material. To take the first step in defeating these bad habits, we must first come to understand where they root from. For example, if you get distracted easily, remind yourself to remove distractions every time you sit down to study. Though it may take some time to promote new habits, don’t get discouraged, working towards change is just the start you need.
  • Learn, apply and repeat. Every one learns differently and the same goes with studying. For some it may mean studying in groups, while for others studying alone is the most effective. Whichever approach you take, be sure it’s the right fit for you and don’t be afraid to experiment if it’s not. Play around with different studying techniques to uncover what successfully works for you and then stick with it.
