A Checklist to Consider to Find a New Job

1)      Optimize your LinkedIn profile: LinkedIn is an effective social media tool for professionals to search for new hires, industry affiliates and other career-related resources.  Recruiters and company executives actively look for potential candidates on LinkedIn who may appear qualified and often scan candidates’ profiles who have already been selected for the interview process. This is a great opportunity to leverage your LinkedIn profile as an online resume to tout your experiences and skills. You can find ways to further optimize your LinkedIn profile with this helpful list.

2)      Revamp your resume: Finding a job is competitive and your application will most likely fall into a large pool of others.  Putting your best face forward- on paper- is the first step to getting contacted for an interview. Make sure resume is concise, free of grammatical errors, and highlights your past and/or current key experiences and achievements.

3)      Tailor your cover letter: Use the cover letter as an opportunity to shine among other candidates who are equally as qualified as you by not only articulating your experience and how you will be a good fit for the role, but by making them feel special and that you took the time to personally address that particular company.  Here are some great examples for inspiration.

4)      Create a list of companies and contacts: Compile a list of companies that interest you and prioritize the ones with open positions in addition to the ones that don’t have any listed at the moment. You can always reach out to the hiring manager or HR via email or LinkedIn for an inquiry regarding open positions.  This list will keep you organized and assure you that you’re not leaving any stone unturned.

Getting a job is not an easy task. On the contrary it is important for you to maintain a good portfolio along with the checklist mentioned above to make the process easy.
